Whether you are planning a beach holiday in Mexico, a trekking trip in Nepal, or a family visit to South Asia or Africa, the right travel vaccines and medications can keep your trip on track. This checklist covers what to think about before you go.

Step 1 — Book a travel consult 6 to 8 weeks before departure

Some travel vaccines need multiple doses spaced weeks apart. Some require a few days to take effect. Booking your consultation 6 to 8 weeks before departure gives you flexibility. Last-minute travel? We can still help — call us at (780) 443-0202.

Step 2 — Know your destination

Bring your full itinerary: countries, cities, dates, and types of activities. The risk profile differs between an air-conditioned resort and a rural homestay. Our pharmacists check the latest Public Health Agency of Canada and CDC travel notices for each destination.

Step 3 — Vaccines to consider

  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Typhoid
  • Yellow fever (required for entry to some countries)
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • Rabies (for high-exposure travel)
  • Cholera
  • Meningococcal (required for Hajj/Umrah)
  • Routine boosters: tetanus, MMR, polio, COVID-19, influenza

Step 4 — Medications and prevention

  • Antimalarial tablets if travelling to a malaria zone
  • Traveller’s diarrhoea treatment kit
  • Insect repellent containing DEET or icaridin
  • Sunscreen and oral rehydration salts
  • Altitude sickness medication for trekking trips

Step 5 — Documentation

We provide a printed International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (Yellow Card) for vaccines that require it (such as yellow fever). Keep it with your passport.
