Planning a trip? Before you think about sunscreen or currency exchange, think about the shots you might need, and the medications you should have with you when you leave the country. At Acme Drug Mart in Meadowlark, our licensed pharmacists offer one-on-one travel health consultations and administer travel vaccines right at the pharmacy, usually within the same week you call.
No waiting months for a specialty clinic appointment. No rushed five-minute advice at a walk-in. Just a real conversation with someone who will look at your destination, your itinerary, and your health, and help you prepare properly.
A pre-travel consultation at Acme typically takes 20 to 40 minutes and covers:
In Alberta, licensed pharmacists can assess, prescribe, and administer most travel vaccines and medications. That means a trip to Acme can replace a referral to a specialty travel clinic that might be booked three months out. We work within a structured, evidence-based process and keep up with CDC and Public Health Agency of Canada advisories so our recommendations reflect what’s current, not what was true five years ago.
We’ll also be honest with you: if your destination or health history needs something we can’t provide, we’ll tell you so and point you to the right specialist.
Travel consultations are not covered by Alberta Health. Consultation fees and vaccine costs are discussed up front, before any service begins, so you know exactly what you’ll pay. Some employer benefit plans and private insurance cover travel vaccines — we’ll provide an invoice you can submit. If you’re traveling for work, ask your employer whether they cover it.
Call (780) 443-0202 or drop in during pharmacy hours. If you already know where and when you’re going, have the following ready when you call:
Ideally, book 6 to 8 weeks before departure. Some vaccine series need multiple doses over weeks. That said, even a last-minute consultation the week before you fly is still worth doing — there’s almost always something we can do to reduce your risk.
No. In Alberta, licensed pharmacists can provide travel consultations and administer most travel vaccines directly. You can self-refer.
Yellow fever vaccine administration requires a designated yellow fever clinic. If your destination requires yellow fever certification, call us first — we’ll tell you whether we can administer it in-house or whether we need to refer you to a designated centre, and we’ll help you book.
It depends on the number of vaccines and consultation time. We’ll give you a full quote before starting. Consultation fees typically start around $30 to $60, and vaccine costs vary widely by product.
Come in anyway. We’ll do what we can. Some protection is almost always better than none.
Yes. VFR travelers are statistically the most likely to get preventable travel illnesses because they stay longer, eat local food in people’s homes, and skip precautions tourists take. This is the group travel medicine exists for.
