If you take three or more prescription medications, you may qualify for a free, government-funded medication review with your pharmacist. It is one of the most under-used services in Alberta — and one of the most valuable.

What is a medication review?

A medication review is a private, sit-down conversation with a pharmacist where you go through every prescription, over-the-counter medication and supplement you currently take. The pharmacist checks for:

  • Drug interactions you may not be aware of
  • Duplicate or unnecessary medications
  • Side effects you have been putting up with
  • Cheaper alternatives or generic substitutions
  • Missed doses or simplification opportunities (e.g., once-daily versions)

Is it really free?

Yes. Alberta Health funds Standard Medication Management Assessments (SMMA) and Comprehensive Annual Care Plans (CACP) for eligible Albertans through their pharmacist. There is no out-of-pocket cost.

Who should book one?

  • Anyone taking three or more chronic medications
  • Anyone who has recently been discharged from hospital
  • Anyone with a recent diagnosis of diabetes, COPD, heart failure, or hypertension
  • Anyone who feels their medication routine is too complicated
  • Caregivers who manage medications for a family member

What to bring

  • All prescription bottles (or a current med list)
  • Over-the-counter medications and supplements you take
  • Your Alberta Health Care card
  • Any recent lab results, if you have them
