What a pharmacy transfer actually involves

Many people assume that switching pharmacies requires a trip to their doctor, a new prescription, or a complicated conversation with their current pharmacy. None of that is true. A pharmacy transfer in Alberta is a straightforward, professionally managed process that the new pharmacy handles on your behalf.

When you initiate a transfer to Acme Drug Mart, we contact your current pharmacy directly. Under standards set by the Alberta College of Pharmacy, your existing pharmacy is required to release your prescription history to us. Your existing prescriptions transfer with all remaining refills intact. You don't lose any refills, and you don't need to book a doctor's appointment to reestablish your medications at a new location.

The entire process is administrative. Your pharmacist at the new pharmacy handles it. You provide the information needed to make the call; they do the rest.

What you need — just three things

To initiate a transfer to Acme Drug Mart, we need only three pieces of information:

  • Your full legal name
  • Your date of birth
  • The name and phone number of your current pharmacy

That's it. If you have your medication names handy, or a photo of the label on a prescription bottle, that helps us locate your file faster — but it's optional. Most patients have everything we need already in their head.

How long does it take?

Most pharmacy transfers complete within 24 hours. In practice, many transfers are processed the same day — particularly when you call us directly during business hours and your current pharmacy is accessible by phone.

Occasional delays happen when current pharmacies are slow to respond or when records need to be retrieved from archival systems. We follow up proactively and keep you informed if anything is holding up the process.

One exception worth noting: controlled substance prescriptions — such as opioids or certain sleep or anxiety medications — may require a fresh prescription from your prescribing physician rather than a direct pharmacy transfer. This is a regulatory requirement, not a policy choice. If any of your medications fall into this category, we will let you know immediately and can often help coordinate the necessary documentation with your doctor's office.

Why patients switch to Acme Drug Mart

People switch pharmacies for a lot of reasons — a move across the city, dissatisfaction with their current service, or a recommendation from a friend. Here is what patients most often tell us draws them to Acme Drug Mart specifically:

  • Personalized service: Our pharmacist knows returning patients by name and by file. When you call with a question, you reach someone who has context about your medications and health history — not a call centre.
  • Same-day free delivery: We deliver to West Edmonton and surrounding areas at no charge. For patients who manage multiple medications or have mobility limitations, this makes a meaningful practical difference.
  • Prescribing pharmacist on site: Our pharmacist can assess and treat a range of minor ailments — cold sores, UTIs, yeast infections, contraception, and more — without a doctor referral, all covered by Alberta Health Care.
  • Direct insurance billing: We bill all major insurers directly. You don't pay out of pocket and wait for reimbursement.
  • Free parking and full accessibility: Located in Meadowlark Place with ample free parking and full wheelchair access.

What about loyalty programs?

Large chain pharmacies often use loyalty point programs as a retention tool — and they are effective, because leaving behind accumulated points feels like losing something. It is worth doing the math, though. Typical pharmacy loyalty programs return approximately 0.5% in points value on purchases. For a patient spending $200 per month on medications, that works out to roughly $12 per year in reward value.

Compare that to the value of free same-day delivery (which saves both money and time), a prescribing pharmacist who can handle minor ailment visits at no charge to you, and a service relationship where someone actually knows your file. Most patients who make the switch find the calculation straightforward.
