Why the 6–8 Week Window Matters

Most travellers book international flights three months in advance but delay health consultations until the week before departure — often too late for vaccines that require multiple doses or need time to build immunity. Starting early gives you full protection options and avoids last-minute scrambles.

The timeline varies by vaccine type. Single-dose vaccines like Hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus boosters typically become effective within two weeks of administration. Multi-dose schedules require more planning:

  • Hepatitis B: Standard three-dose series spans 6 months. Accelerated schedules (3 doses over 21 days) are available but require a fourth dose at 12 months for lasting protection.
  • Rabies pre-exposure: Three doses over 3–4 weeks.
  • Japanese encephalitis: Two doses, at least 4 weeks apart, with the second dose given at least one week before travel.

Rule of thumb: Book your travel health consultation at least 6–8 weeks before departure. Even 2–3 weeks out, partial protection from single-dose vaccines is better than none — call us and we will work with what time you have.

Mexico, Caribbean & Central America

These are among the most popular Canadian travel destinations, and the vaccine recommendations are well established.

  • Hepatitis A and typhoid are universally recommended for all travellers, regardless of accommodation type.
  • Hepatitis B is recommended for unvaccinated travellers who may receive medical care, have sexual contact with locals, or have exposure through activities like tattooing.
  • Rural travel adds considerations: rabies pre-exposure prophylaxis for travellers spending time outdoors or in contact with animals, and malaria chemoprophylaxis depending on specific region and itinerary.
  • Travellers’ diarrhea prescriptions (azithromycin or ciprofloxacin as a standby antibiotic) are highly valuable and can be issued at your consultation visit.

Southern Europe & the Mediterranean

Travel to Western and Southern Europe generally carries lower infectious disease risk compared to tropical destinations. For most travellers, ensuring routine vaccinations are current is the primary goal: tetanus-diphtheria, MMR (measles-mumps-rubella), and polio.

Hepatitis A is recommended if it is not already in your immunization history — many Canadian adults were vaccinated in childhood, but confirming your records is worthwhile before travel. Beyond vaccines, food safety practices and sun protection are the primary health concerns for this region.

Southeast Asia, India & Africa

Travel to these regions warrants the most comprehensive travel health consultations. Recommendations vary substantially by specific country, region, season, and planned activities. A thorough itinerary review is essential.

Potential vaccines and medications for these destinations include:

  • Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B
  • Typhoid (oral or injectable)
  • Japanese encephalitis (Southeast Asia)
  • Rabies pre-exposure prophylaxis
  • Meningococcal meningitis (sub-Saharan Africa)
  • Malaria chemoprophylaxis (destination-dependent)

Yellow fever note: Yellow fever vaccination and the required International Certificate of Vaccination are only available through Public Health Agency of Canada designated yellow fever vaccination centres. This service is not available at Acme Drug Mart. We will refer you to an appropriate centre and help coordinate your full consultation around this requirement.

South America

Yellow fever requirements vary by country and sometimes by specific region within a country. Some destinations require proof of vaccination for entry; others only recommend it for certain jungle or rural areas. Your pharmacist will review current requirements based on your itinerary.

Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and malaria chemoprophylaxis may apply depending on destination. Travellers heading to high-altitude destinations — such as Cusco, Peru or La Paz, Bolivia, both above 3,400 metres — should discuss acetazolamide (Diamox) for altitude sickness prevention.

What to Bring to Your Travel Health Consultation

Come prepared and your consultation will be faster and more useful. Bring:

  • Your full itinerary: departure and return dates, all destinations including transit stops, type of accommodations (hotel, hostel, rural homestay), and planned activities (hiking, wildlife contact, swimming in freshwater)
  • Your immunization records: knowing what you’ve already received avoids unnecessary repeat doses and helps fill gaps
  • Alberta Health Card: required for covered pharmacist services
  • Current medication list: some travel medications interact with commonly prescribed drugs
  • Relevant medical conditions: immunosuppression, pregnancy, chronic disease, and prior allergic reactions all affect recommendations

Common Travel Medications

Concern Medication Options Notes
Travellers’ diarrhea Azithromycin or ciprofloxacin Standby antibiotic — prescribed at consultation, used only if needed
Nausea / motion sickness Ondansetron or dimenhydrinate Ondansetron is prescription-strength; dimenhydrinate (Gravol) is OTC
Altitude sickness Acetazolamide (Diamox) Recommended for destinations above 2,500 m; start 1–2 days before ascent
Malaria prevention Atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone), doxycycline, or mefloquine Choice depends on destination resistance patterns and patient factors

Last-Minute Travel

If departure is less than two weeks away, do not assume it is too late. Contact Acme Drug Mart immediately. Many single-dose vaccines provide meaningful protection within days, and most travel medications can be dispensed the same day. Even partial protection is substantially better than no protection, and your pharmacist will prioritize the highest-impact interventions for your specific itinerary.

Insurance and Costs

Most Canadian private extended health benefit plans cover travel vaccines — check your plan details before your visit. Alberta Blue Cross covers travel vaccines under specific group benefit plans. Without coverage, individual adult vaccine costs typically range from $80 to $150 per dose depending on the vaccine.

Family travel consultations are available — call ahead to book an appointment that accommodates multiple family members together. Direct billing is available for most plans at Acme Drug Mart.
