What’s in the 2026–27 Flu Vaccine
Each year, the World Health Organization analyzes influenza surveillance data from the southern hemisphere’s flu season to predict which strains will circulate in the north the following winter. The 2026–27 quadrivalent influenza vaccine is formulated to protect against four strains:
- Two influenza A strains (including H1N1 and H3N2 subtypes)
- Two influenza B strains (Victoria and Yamagata lineages)
Multiple formulations are available to match the right product to the right patient:
- Standard-dose injectable vaccine: appropriate for most adults and children 6 months and older
- High-dose vaccine (Fluzone High-Dose): contains four times the standard antigen amount and is recommended for adults 65 and older, as immune responses to standard-dose vaccines weaken with age
- Live attenuated nasal spray (FluMist): needle-free option for healthy individuals aged 2–59 who are not pregnant; not recommended for immunocompromised individuals
Your pharmacist at Acme Drug Mart will confirm which formulation is most appropriate for you or your family member during your visit.
Who Should Get Vaccinated
The Public Health Agency of Canada recommends annual influenza vaccination for everyone 6 months of age and older. Certain groups are prioritized because they face higher risk of serious complications or because vaccinating them protects others:
It is equally important that lower-risk individuals get vaccinated. Influenza spreads easily before symptoms appear, and vaccinating healthy adults and children forms a protective buffer around those who cannot mount a strong immune response — including newborns under 6 months who cannot yet receive the vaccine.

What to Expect During Your Visit
The entire visit typically takes about 10 minutes from check-in to observation completion. Here is what happens:
- Brief health screening to confirm the vaccine is appropriate for you that day
- Administration of the vaccine, typically in the upper arm (deltoid)
- A 15-minute post-vaccination observation period — required by all Canadian pharmacy standards
After vaccination, you may notice mild soreness or redness at the injection site for one to two days. Some individuals experience a brief low-grade fever or fatigue in the 24–48 hours following vaccination. These are normal immune responses and are a sign the vaccine is working — they are not the flu.
Common Misconceptions About the Flu Shot
When to Get Vaccinated
Ideally, receive your flu shot by the end of October to ensure protection is fully established before the peak of flu season, which typically runs from December through February in Canada.
However, vaccination at any point during flu season still provides benefit. If you missed the October window, come in any time — flu season often extends into March or April, and protection typically lasts through the season.
Children receiving the flu vaccine for the first time require two doses given at least four weeks apart. If your child is getting their first-ever flu vaccination, start the process in September to complete both doses before the season peaks.
